Tōkei was an illustrator who drew the pictures for many different picture books. One of these books featured morning glories. It had several different titles, one of which was Kengo Hinrui Zukō (Complete Illustrated Study of Morning Glories). It was published in 1815. The book’s 37 pictures are shown in this gallery. Most of these morning glories are novel forms of their wild ancestor and were chosen presumably to entertain picture viewers.
