Shiseki Sō Galleries

Shiseki (1712-1786) authored a number of woodblock-printed books which included pictures of flowers and (or) birds. Two of their titles are shown below. Click on a title to see the book's pictures. Shiseki drew these pictures using two different styles; namely, "boned" (i.e., objects outlined in black) and "boneless" (i.e., objects not outlined in black). The latter style made objects look more life-like. Some of the pictures were printed in full color which was a first for Japanese woodblock-printed books.
