The Japanese call their country Nippon (or Nihon) 日本 which is usually translated as "land of the rising sun". The rising sun is symbolized by a red disc on the Japanese national flag (Figure 1). | ||

Japan is also a land of mountains, occupying almost two-thirds of the landscape. One of the most famous of these mountains is the volcano called Mount Fuji 富士山 (Figure 2). It is also Japan's highest mountain (i.e., 3776 m). | ||
