In 1880 Shinbee Shibata edited a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Kachō Gafu (i.e., Picture Album of Flowers and Birds). The book’s thirty pictures of flowers and (or) birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The anonymous artist drew the pictures using a Chinese style called Nanga which attempts to reveal the inner spirit of the objects depicted rather than their actual shapes and colors.
