Mitsufusa and Ranzan co-authored a picture book entitled Kai (Selected Flowering Plants). Published in 1765 it included 198 pictures of flowering plants. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The shape of each plant was drawn accurately but colored only in shades of gray as was typical in the mid-1700s. Identifying the plants in this picture book was very difficult for two reasons. First, the plants true colors were not shown and second, most of the plant names given by the authors are no longer used.
