In 1882 Ryūsai published a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Ryūsai Kachō Zuhen (i.e., Illustrations of Flowers and Birds by Ryūsai). The book’s thirty-six pictures of flowers and (or) birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The flowers and birds drawn by Ryūsai are challenging to identify because neither their shapes nor colors are true to life. This drawing style was used by Japanese artists to entertain picture viewers by depicting familiar flowers and birds in unfamiliar ways. To see a gallery with larger pictures click here.
