Ryūsui was an amateur artist whose artwork appears in a number of woodblock-printed picture books published in the mid-1700s. One of these books combined poetry with pictures of flowers and animals. Entitled Yama No Sachi (i.e., Treasures of the Mountains) and published in 1765, it included the forty-seven pictures shown in this gallery. Flower shapes were drawn fairly accurately but their colors were not, presumably because multi-color printing was still in its infancy at that time in Japan.
