Sadatoshi Nakaji drew the pictures for a three-volume picture book entitled Ehon Hitsuyō (i.e., The Indispensable Picture Book for Painting). Published in 1751, it provided aspiring artists with models for painting a variety of subjects, including flowers and birds. The book’s twenty-four pictures of flowers and (or) birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Typical of early 18th century Japanese artists, Sadatoshi drew the shape and surface details of birds only semi-accurately.
