Introduction An anthology is a printed collection of notable artistic or literary works. The artists or writers whose work was chosen for inclusion in an anthology were considered to be distinguished based on the quality of their work. This exhibition includes pictures by fifty-seven of these distinguished artists whose flower and (or) bird art was included in one of the following three anthologies: 1) Ehon Tekagami Wakan Meihitsu (Picture-Book of Painting Models by Distinguished Japanese and Chinese Brushes), edited by Shumboku Ōoka and published in 1720. 2) Meika Gafu (Picture Album by Distinguished Artists), edited by Tōkei Mano and published in 1814. 3) Meika Gafu (Picture Album by Distinguished Artists), edited by Naosaburō Yamada and published in 1913. These three anthologies were chosen from anthologies in the Reader Collection of Japanese Flower and Bird Art because, collectively, they covered the range of major painting stylesa used by Japanese artists for flower and bird art. The first anthology included artists who used the Kanō style (five artists) or Rinpa style (one artist). The second anthology included artists who used the Nagasaki style (eight artists) or Nanga style (six artists) or Maruyama-Shijō style (fifteen artists) and the third anthology included artists who used the Nihonga style (22 artists). In the exhibition below, pictures from the oldest anthology are presented first and artists are grouped by painting style. a Characteristics of each style are described in the exhibition entitled Painting Styles Illustrated in 18th and 19th Century Japanese Books. |
